To run a web based business successfully requires the ability to generate both high quality and a high quantity of traffic. Every visitor to your website should represent a potential sale if you are using the proper techniques to generate that traffic in the first place.
Anyone can get a stream of random visitors to their website, there’s no special magic to that. If you sell real estate in Boca Raton, however, having skateboard enthusiasts from New York visit your website isn’t going to provide any benefit. These are not your target customers and the odds of convincing them to buy a house from you are infinitesimally small now matter how good your sales pitch may be. Whatever products or services you sell, you want people who have an interest in those products or goods to visit your website. Those are the visitors that can turn into customers.
The web offers a real opportunity to let potential customers self-select for you. IN the month of September alone, more than 13 billion times, people turned to the internet to search for something on one of the major search engines. They searched for everything from Oprah’s latest book club selection to a new home, from labradoodles to business consultants. For the most part, they found what they were looking for. They didn’t all make purchases, but a great many of them did.
The companies who have web sites that showed up on the first page of search engine results for the words or phrases that best describe their business are the ones that took the lion’s share of those sales. Try this test of your own website right now. Think about the words or phrase that a customer would use if they were looking for the products you sell. Enter them into Google’s search window and hit enter. Do you see your company name on the first page? Or do you see ten of your competitors? If your company is on that first page of results, then you’ve got a good start.
Customers will use a variety of words or phrases to search for things they want to buy. Think of something as simple as cars. Customers can search for cars, automobiles, used cars, new cars, 2009 Ford F150, lowest price new car, and a host of other words and phrases. Ideally, if you sell new and used cars, you’d like your company website to show up on the first page of search results for each of these terms.
If your website didn’t show up on the first page of results when you attempted the test, or if you’d like to generate more targeted web traffic to your business website then you may need to think about Search Engine Optimization Marketing to make sure that you are getting your fair share of the those customers that are self-selecting by searching for the products or services that you sell.
